Install F.B. Purity - Clean Up and Customize Facebook
F.B. Purity is a browser extension / addon that lets you clean up and customise Facebook, hides the things you don't want to see, and gives you lots of extra filtering options.
Like several bazillion other users, I like using Facebook to keep tabs on what my friends are up to. What I don't like is the endless stream of "so-and-so took this quiz" and "Joe became friends with Jane" messages and "What Kind of Jedi Are You?" come-ons.
That's why I just became a fan of Facebook Purity, a browser add-on that removes those annoying quiz and application notifications from your Facebook home page.
Personally, I'm loving this add-on. Anything that cuts down Facebook clutter is a winner in my book.
To customize which stories show up, click on the "F.B. Purity" link and
select what you want hidden; the interface is extremely intuitive. Apart
from having the option to hide a multitude of stories including profile
updates and tagged photos, you can hide the suggestions box, sponsored
box, and the "get connected" box in the right-hand panel of the screen.
Facebook has the ability to hide unwanted applications for you, but
having all these options clearly marked in one place is very practical.
Facebook does not have the ability to hide the side-panel boxes.
The ability to hide different aspects of Facebook, while still having
the option to display them, is extremely useful. This add-on is great
for people who miss the olden days of Facebook, where cow pictures did
not show up in every other post.
F.B. Purity is compatible with the following web browsers: Firefox, Google Chrome, Edge, Safari, Opera, Brave and Maxthon, running on Windows, Mac, Linux etc. Installation instructions are listed below:
Please note that the FBP extension (for older firefox browsers) is no longer available. If you want to use the latest version of FBP, you either need to update your browser, or else install a Greasemonkey compatible extension, and then install the GM Script version of FBP (link to the GM script is also on this page)
Sorry F.B. Purity is not compatible with Firefox 3 and under.
Next: click the "Allow" button at the top of your browser window.
Please note: If you get a "Connection failure" error when trying to install FBP, try this: "Right-click" on the "Install F.B. Purity" button and then click "Save link as" then save the .xpi extension to your computer. Next drag the .xpi file from the saved location into Firefox's "about:addons" Extensions management page.
Please note: Running both script and extension version of FBP at the same time will not work, so please make sure you just install one or the other. The Greasemonkey version and the Extension version of FBP have the exact same functionality.
First you need to have the Greasemonkey addon for Firefox. If you don't already have it, you can get it here: Greasemonkey
Once you have Greasemonkey installed and running you can install FBP by clicking the "Install F.B. Purity - GM Script" Button above.

How to update F.B. Purity on Chrome
Chrome actually automatically updates installed extensions on its own and checks for extension updates about every 5 hours, so if you just leave it, it will eventually update on its own.
If you want Chrome to update its extensions immediately, you can do so by going to the Chrome Extensions management page (via the "Extensions" menu at the top right of the browser) then make sure the "Developer Mode" switch is turned on at the top of the page, then click the "Update" button that will be showing at the top of the page.
After updating, if you have any open Facebook pages, you will need to reload them to get the new version of the extension to run on them.
Next:On the Google Chrome Webstore page click the "Add to Chrome" button to finish the installation process. Once FBP is installed, you will need to reload any open Facebook pages.
Please note: If you are trying to update FBP and the installation doesn't work, go to Chrome's Extensions Management page, which you can open via the Chrome menu icon in the top right corner of the browser then clicking "Extensions"
Then tick the "Developer Mode" box at the top of the page
Then click the "Update" button in the blue bar at the top of the page.
If that doesn't work, export your FBP Settings, via the "Export Settings" link at the bottom of the F.B. Purity options screen, then uninstall F.B. Purity, then re-install it by clicking the green "Install F.B. Purity" button on this page, once you have it re-installed, go to the FBP options screen and click the "Import Settings" link to import your previously saved settings. This process should only be necessary if FBP has the "Not From Chrome Web Store" written next to it on the Extensions management page, which occurs if you install FBP via the "drag and drop" method (which is only required for installing Beta versions).
Please note that F.B Purity is not compatible with the mobile / tablet version of Chrome, it only works on the Desktop version.
Please note: Running both script and extension version of FBP at the same time will not work, so please make sure you just install one or the other. You can transfer settings between different versions of FBP by using the "Export Settings" and "Import Settings" links at the bottom of the FBP options screen. The Greasemonkey version and the Extension version of FBP have the exact same functionality.
To install the GM Script on Chrome, you first need to have the Tampermonkey extension for Chrome installed. If you don't already have it, you can get it here: Tampermonkey
Once you have Tampermonkey installed and running you can then install FBP by clicking the "Install F.B. Purity - GM Script" Button above.

**IMPORTANT** Please Note, in order to install the F.B. Purity GM Script for Safari, you first need to install a GM Script compatible Userscript Manager extension. There are currently 2 to choose from. The first is more advanced and has lots of features, but you need to pay $2 to install it, and is called Tampermonkey. The second is more basic but is free, and is called UserScripts. FBP should in theory work fine with either User Script manager extension.
Next: Select "Open", when asked, "Do you want to open or save this file?" (N.B. For Safari v7+ the file downloads straight to your downloads folder, and you need to open it from there)
Then Click "Install", when asked "Are you sure you want to install the extension 'F.B. Purity (Cleans up Facebook)'?"
Click the Green Button below to Install F.B. Purity for Apple Safari Downloading & Installing literally takes just a few seconds!
You are running an old version of Safari that doesn't support extensions, sorry.
First you need to install SIMBL. Which you can get here: SIMBL
You then need to install the Greasekit addon. You can download it here: Greasekit
Once you have the SIMBL and Greasekit addons installed and running you can install the script by clicking the "Install F.B. Purity" button above. (N.B This method is no longer guaranteed to work, as the script is most likely no longer compatible with older browsers)
Opera 12 is no longer supported. You need to upgrade to the latest version of Opera to use F.B. Purity.

Please note: there may be a delay of a day or two after an FBP update is released before the Opera version of the update is available, due to the manual code review process Opera staff have to do before an Opera extension update goes live.
Next: A grey popup bar will be displayed at the top of the window saying "The extension was disabled because it is from an unknown source. Go to the extensions manager to enable it."
Click the "Go" button on the popup bar, to go to the Extensions management page, then click the "Install" button beneath the greyed out entry for F.B Purity to enable the extension and finish the installation.
*****IMPORTANT PLEASE READ!!!***** If you are updating from a previous version, after clicking the Install button, Check FBP's version number on your Opera extensions page, to see if the update has worked, because Opera has a bug where it doesn't give any visual indication when you update an extension, also you may need to wait a short while before the extensions page gets updated with the new version.
You are running an old version of Opera that doesn't support Extensions, sorry.
Open the "Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Content > JavaScript options" menu
Select the directory where you want to store your greasemonkey scripts.
Right click and select "Save As" on the install button above, and save the script to your previously chosen directory. Make sure you do not have multiple copies of FBP in your chosen script directory as the script will stop working.
Please note, if you plan to use the script on the HTTPS version of facebook, you will need to open opera:config and enable the setting to allow user javascript to run over https

Next: Click the "Save" button in the dialog window that pops up
Next: Open the saved extension file in the download manager window, then click either the Install or Update button that is displayed to complete the installation.
You appear to be using Internet Explorer, unfortunately F.B. Purity is not and will not be made available for Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer is an unsafe browser. Why not try installing one of the web browsers that it is available for: Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox, Opera. Seriously, you won't regret it.
If you are at work or somewhere that you don't have permission to install a new browser, perhaps you could try running a portable version of one of those browsers, that can run from a USB drive.
P.S. If you are not actually using Internet Explorer and are just "spoofing" the IE User Agent in order to disable Timeline, you just need to click the link above with the name of the actual browser you are using, and download the extension from there.
There are 2 options for installing F.B Purity on Microsoft Edge, the easiest option, is to install FBP via the Windows Edge Store.

Please Note: If you already have FBP installed and wish to update FBP, you should know that Edge extension updates need to be manually vetted and approved by Microsoft Staff before they can be published, so you may need to wait a day or so after a new version of FBP is released, before you can get the update. You should also know that the Edge browser updates its extensions automatically when new versions become available.
You should now be transferred to the Windows Edge Store where you will be able to add F.B. Purity to your browser.
Your web browser does not appear to be one of F.B Purity's supported browsers ( Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera and Maxthon )
If you know that it is compatible with one of those browsers, you are welcome to try the corresponding version of F.B. Purity via the browser links above. If your browser has a Greasemonkey compatbile extension available, you can try installing that and then install the GM Script version of F.B. Purity.
If none of those suggestions work, why not try installing one of the previously mentioned, supported browsers, you might just like it :) If you don't have installation rights to install software on your computer, you could try using a "portable" version of one of the supported browsers that you can run directly from a USB stick drive. The advantage of having it on a USB drive, is your favourite browser and custom FBP settings will go with you wherever you go.
