Some Sponsored Posts have started to get past FBP’s filter. Here is the solution
I’m getting some reports of Sponsored Posts showing up again for some people so it might mean Facebook is testing out some new code.
If this is affecting you, as mentioned on the FB Purity FAQ page; FB Purity has a back-up method for blocking “Sponsored Posts“, for when the actual Hide Sponsored Posts option doesn’t work. FBP’s hide ‘Posts from Pages that you haven”t “Liked”‘ option, which is located under the “Link / Page Posts” heading on the FBP options screen, will hide posts from any Pages you haven’t “liked”, which means it will hide Sponsored Posts from Pages you haven’t liked.
A side effect of this option is it will also hide posts from Pages you have only “followed” but not “liked”. If you use this option and you have “followed” some pages but not “liked” them, and want to continue seeing those posts, one way to do so is to view the “Pages Feed” which you can select via the Newsfeed drop-down menu at the top left of the Newsfeed.
If you have any questions please read the FAQ page on FBPURITY .COM
If you have any problems, please follow the Troubleshooting Guide on the FAQ page on FBPURITY .COM
Cheers,
Steve

FBP v29.0.6 has been released – with a few minor fixes
Changes in F.B Purity v29.0.6
- Fixed the “Clear Advertisers” button
- Fixed the “Custom Reactions” functionality
- Fixed the Hide “Pages” left column link option. (This option has actually been renamed from “Pages Section” to just “Pages” as Facebook removed the “Pages Section” of the left column quite a while ago now)
- Fixed the Hide “Stories” option for when the Stories box appears in between posts in the Newsfeed.
Important Information for Chrome Users of F.B. Purity
Recent FBP Chrome news. FB Purity was rather abruptly removed from the Chrome Webstore recently by Google, as they wrongly claimed FBP was violating one of their policies. I and many FBP users protested against this, and we eventually got it re-listed again.
FBP Chrome Update Process: After FB Purity for Chrome is first installed, you should from then on receive automatic updates (Chrome checks for extension updates once every 5 hours). If you don’t want to wait, and know an update is available you can force an update by turning on “Developer Mode” on the Chrome extensions management page, then clicking the “Update” button at the top of the page (make sure you don’t have any facebook tabs open, so Chrome can unload the existing version first).
To let other Google Chrome users know that FBP is safe and a great way to clean up Facebook Please leave a 5* review for F.B. Purity in the Google Chrome Webstore
Important information for Firefox users of F.B. Purity
Once you have installed the Firefox version of FB Purity, it should auto-update itself when I release new versions. Firefox users who are getting the “Connection Failure” error when trying to install FBP should know this is a known bug in Firefox that occurs if you are using Antivirus software that monitors your web browsing. The work-around, as mentioned in the FAQ is to right click on the install button, then select save, then install the extension by dragging and dropping it on to the Firefox extension management page. This Firefox bug can also prevent Firefox from automatically updating FBP when new versions are released.
Important Information for Microsft Edge users of F.B. Purity
FB Purity is now available as an official Microsoft Edge extension obtainable directly from the Microsoft Edge store If you install the official Edge FBP extension from the Microsoft Edge store, it should auto-update when new versions are released in future. Be aware however that the Microsoft Store has a slow (manual) approval process for accepting extension updates, so the new version will not show up in the Microsoft Store for a day or two after I release an extension update. Please also note FBP is now also available in the Edge Store for the new development version of Edge that is based on Chromium.
To let other Microsoft Edge users know that FBP is safe and a great way to clean up Facebook Please leave a 5* review for F.B. Purity in the Microsoft Edge Store
Important Information for Opera users of F.B. Purity
The FB Purity extension for Opera needs to be installed via the official Opera Add-ons site, which is where the green Install F.B. Purity button will take you to. Once it has been installed from there, whenever updates to the FBP extension are uploaded and approved on the Opera extensions site (this process can take a few days after I upload an update), the version of FBP in your browser should auto-update at some point. It can sometimes be triggered by closing the browser, waiting a bit and re-opening it, there is also an “Update Extensions Now” button on the Opera extensions management page, which if clicked will update all your Opera extensions to the latest versions. In order for the extension to update you may need to first close any open Facebook tabs.

Important Information for users of the Brave Browser
FB Purity can now be easily installed in the latest release of the Brave browser by going to the FB Purity Chrome Webstore page and clicking the “Add to Chrome” button.
All other FBP users can update to the latest version of FB Purity by clicking the green “Install F.B. Purity” button on the FB Purity Install page on FBPURITY.COM and then following the on screen instructions.

FBP v29.0.0 is out now with new Newsfeed Video Player option + many fixes
FBP v29.0.0 is out now with new Newsfeed Video Player option
Changes in F.B. Purity v29.0.0
- New option titled “Show FBP Video Player Link” that adds a link to view videos in the Newsfeed via the FBP video viewer in new tab. If you are using Chrome it also adds a link to let you watch the video full screen with a single click. (This single click feature is unfortunately not available on Firefox due to a restrictive browser API) The FBP video viewer, which was previously only available for videos that contained ads, now loads much faster, and also now gives you the ability to slow down or speed up the video, and you can also choose the size of the video player. Using FBP’s video player means you can bypass the video “light box” and you will no longer get all the “Up Next” videos and other suggested videos, and the hassle of the video moving to the top right corner of the page when you scroll the page down, then going mute when you move it from the top right back to its normal postition, it also means you can keep a video playing in a background tab, while you scroll your newsfeed. Please note that in order to get this functionality working, FBP has to load a lower resolution version of the Facebook video, so some videos may appear quite blocky when viewed full screen in this manner.
- Moved the Hide “Marketplace” option to the “Hide Right Column Links” section of the FBP options screen, as that is where the majority of Marketplace stuff is now shown.
- New option: “Hide Animated Gifs“, Hides animated Gifs in comments (leaves a blank square behind where the gif would have been). Option is located in the “Font, Colour & Design” section of the FBP options screen.
- Fixed adding “X” button to the “Stories” box when it appears in the middle column, to make it easier and more intuitive to hide.
- Moved: FBP’s existing option to hide the “Stories” box, has now moved to a more prominent position below the “More Options” heading on the FBP options screen. This option will hide the “Stories” box whether its located in the central or right hand column.
- Fixed the “Hide Advertisers” buttons functionality on Facebook’s “Ad Preferences” screen
- Moved the “Hide Graphical Smileys / Emoticons” option to the “Font, Colour & Design” section
- Known Issue: The “Sort Notifications Chronologically” option does not work for some people, if its not working for you, for example the notifications are not showing chronologically turn the option off. If the notifications popup goes blank just after you open it, try opening it again, it should go back to normal. If not you can always click the “See All” link at the bottom of the popup, to view all your Notifications chronologically.
- Reminder: If you are using an old out of date browser or Safari, the “Hide Sponsored Box / Posts” option may not work for you as that option uses a newer technology that your browser’s may not support. If you have that option turned on, and Sponsored posts (ads) are still showing in your Newsfeed, you need to turn on a new option titled: Hide Posts from Pages that you haven’t “Liked” that is located under the “Link / Page Posts” heading on the FBP options screen. To learn more about this option, please read the Release Notes for the earlier FBP release.

Google have removed FB Purity from the Chrome Webstore!!!
*** UPDATE 23rd May 2019 – Google have now re-instated F.B. Purity back into the Chrome Webstore! :) ***
For anyone wondering why its no longer possible to download the Chrome version of FB Purity, Google have unfairly removed the extension from the Google Chrome Webstore, for an absolutely ridiculous reason.
They were claiming my extension violated their policy of “Do not use irrelevant, misleading, or excessive keywords in app descriptions, titles, or metadata.”
Which it most definitely was not doing. The description, title and metadata was not excessive, not misleading and not irrelevant,
I was trying to work with them to get to the bottom of what exactly they felt was wrong with the description, but then they just removed the extension from the webstore before the matter could be resolved, which is extremely annoying and frustrating not just for me, but for all chrome users of FB Purity. I am attempting to get the extension re-instated, but knowing how Google operates, from previous experience, I know this is not going to be easy, and may even be impossible.
If you have any contacts at Google who could help resolve this, please do get in touch, cheers! Also if you have twitter, you can tweet at google via the following @google, @googledevs, @GoogleChromeDev, @googlechrome
On facebook you can post about it on the Google Chrome page, here: https://www.facebook.com/googlechrome/
FB Purity is still available for all other supported Browsers: Firefox, Opera, Safari and Edge.

FBP v28.1.2 out now with New “Auto Hide” filter and various fixes
FBP v28.1.2 out now with new “Auto Hide” filter
Changes in F.B. Purity v28.1.2
- New: “Auto Hide” filter functionality. Auto Hide works in a similar fashion to the Text Filter, it will filter out posts containing any of the list of words or phrases you specify, but instead of just putting them in the “Extra” section where you can still view the hidden posts if you really want to (by clicking the “extra [ Show ]” link at the top of the Newsfeed ), it will put them in the “Extra” section but automatically click Facebook’s Hide Post button to properly hide the post from your newsfeed, so you won’t even see it in the Extra section. One advantage of this is in theory it should nudge Facebook’s algorithm into showing less posts of that type in future. As with the Text Filter, you can also use Regular Expression” syntax in the Auto Hide box. To access the Auto Hide filter box, click the “Auto Hide” link which is just above the big text box on the FBP settings screen, next to where it says “Text Filter.
- Fixed: a bug in the Newsfeed filtering functionality that was letting some posts slip past FBP’s filters
- Fixed: the Hide “People You May Know” option
- Fixed: Custom Reactions (mostly). Facebook has started using an inconsistent naming policy for their reaction images, so though this is mostly fixed, it may not work in some cases, and may break again if they start regularly randomising the reaction image class names.
- Fixed: the Hide “Shared a link” Newsfeed filtering option
- Fixed: “Hide Account Switcher Button” option (located under “Top Nav Bar Options”)
- Reminder: If you are using an old browser or Safari, the “Hide Sponsored Box / Posts” option may not work for you as that option uses a newer technology that your browser’s do not support. If you have that option turned on, and Sponsored posts (ads) are showing in your Newsfeed, you need to turn on a new option titled: Hide Posts from Pages that you haven’t “Liked” that is located under the “Link / Page Posts” heading on the FBP options screen. To learn more about this option, please read the Release Notes for the previous FBP release.
- Please Note: The “Stories” box used to live in the right hand column of the Newsfeed, but for some people Facebook have switched it so it shows in the middle column of the Newsfeed, directly beneath the Status update box. FBP’s existing option to hide the “Stories” box, which is located under the “Hide Right Column Links” heading on the FBP options screen, will also hide the “Stories” box when it is showing in the middle column.

FBP v27.6.0 out now – Adds a new method for blocking sponsored posts
FBP v27.6.0 out now – Adds a new method for blocking Sponsored Posts
This release has a fix for sponsored posts that are not being hidden for some people. Please note if you have the Hide “Sponsored Box / Posts” option turned on and you are not seeing any Sponsored Posts, then you don’t need to change your current settings.
Changes in F.B. Purity v27.6.0
- New: Option to hide posts from Pages that you haven’t liked titled: Hide “Posts from Pages that you haven’t liked”
- Change: Renamed Hide “Fan Page Posts” option to Hide “Page Posts” and moved the option under the “Link / Page Posts” heading on the FB Purity settings screen.
- Fixed: The “R” key functionality. Pressing the “R” key when viewing the Newsfeed (Most Recent / Top Stories or Pages Feed ) FBP should re-sort the currently loaded posts in that feed into the correct Chronological order.
- Fixed: If you have “whitelisted” any friends, the green text “Whitelisted” should appear at the top of any post they make, to make it clear why that post is bypassing FBP’s filters.
- Fixed: The Watch Vid (No ads) link that gets added to video posts that contain video ads didnt work on some “Facebook Watch” posts in the Newsfeed, it should work again now.
- Known Issue: The “Show full date/time on posts” option no longer works correctly due to a Facebook code change, this is quite hard to fix, so may be broken for a while.
Notes on the new option for hiding Sponsored Posts:
The fix for hiding Sponsored Posts for those people who are still seeing them consists of a new Newsfeed filter option, located under the “Link / Page Posts” heading on the FBP options screen, titled: Hide “Posts from Pages that you haven’t liked”
If you tick that box it should hide all posts from Pages which you haven’t “liked” from the Newsfeed, which means it will hide all sponsored posts (from Pages you haven’t liked). A side effect of hiding all posts from Pages you haven’t liked, is that it will also hide posts from Pages you have followed (but not liked). There is no easy way to get around that with the code, as Facebook does not easily provide a list of Pages that the user has followed that FBP can access .
The workaround for people who have followed Pages and still wish to see posts from the followed Pages in their Newsfeed would be to occasionally view the “Pages Feed” which will show you the posts from Pages you have liked and also the posts from Pages you have followed. You can access the “Pages Feed” at the following URL https://facebook.com/?sk=pages FB Purity also adds a link to this page in a couple of places, on the Newsfeed (3 dots) drop down menu at the top left of the Newsfeed, and also on the https://facebook.com/pages page. Of course, if you don’t follow any Pages (instead of liking them) then this issue won’t affect you.
Another thing to note about this new option is that if the Sponsored post is from a Page that you have “liked” then it will still show in the Newsfeed, however its worth noting that Sponsored Posts are usually just “normal” posts that the Page has paid Facebook some money so they will show it to more people than normally would see it (i.e. to people who haven’t actually liked or followed the page) so you most likely would want to see the Sponsored Posts that the Page you have liked is posting.
Please note this option works in conjunction with the hide “Sponsored Box / Posts” option, so if you are still seeing Sponsored Posts even though you have the hide “Sponsored Box / Posts” option ticked, you should leave it ticked and also tick the new option, as the hide “Sponsored Box / Posts” option also hides ads on the right hand side of the Newsfeed and may catch ads in the Newsfeed that the new option doesn’t.

Once you have installed FB Purity for Chrome, you should from then on receive automatic updates (Chrome checks for extension updates once every 5 hours). If you don’t want to wait, and know an update is available you can force an update by turning on “Developer Mode” on the Chrome extensions management page, then clicking the “Update” button at the top of the page (make sure you don’t have any facebook tabs open, so Chrome can unload the existing version first).

Important information for Firefox users of F.B. Purity
Firefox users who are getting the “Connection Failure” error when trying to install FBP, I have discovered the reason why this is happening. It is a known bug in Firefox that occurs if you are using Antivirus software that monitors your web browsing.

F.B Purity has now been Busting the Fluff on Facebook for 10 years! FBP update v27.5.1 is out now!
F.B Purity has now been Busting the Fluff on Facebook for 10 years!
Since its initial release in March 2009, F.B. Purity has been battling against Facebook’s insistence on foisting tons of crap on its users that they just dont want to see. There have been many ups and downs and many clashes with Facebook where it could have spelled the end for F.B. Purity, but I have persevered and battled on, to bring FBP Users what they want, which is the abillity to control what Facebook features they see and Customize their Facebook experience to make it a more pleasant and fun experience
To coincide with the 10 year anniversary, I’ve released an update to FBP (v27.4) that fixes the recent issue with the “Hide Sponsored Box / Posts” option, which was hiding more posts than it should have due to a Facebook code change. It also fixes the “Watch Vid (No Ads)” link that sometimes didn”t work.
Changes in F.B. Purity v27.5.1
- Fixed the hide “Sponsored Posts” bug, which was causing some “normal” posts as well as “Sponsored Posts” to be hidden. Sponsored posts are now also filtered out in languages other than English.
- Fixed “Watch Vid (No Ads)” link which wasn’t working sometimes previously
- New functionality for Watch Video (No Ads) (rewind/fast forward via arrow keys, pause via spacebar, up and down arrow keys increase/decrease volume), it also now preserves the user selected video volume level, just like with other videos on Facebook.
- Fixed the Import Settings functionality for Google Chrome
- Fixed/Changed The “Show Full Date/Time on posts” option stopped working for some posts due to a code change by Facebook. I’ve not managed to fix this completely, but for some of the posts where the Full Date/Time doesn’t show, if you hover the mouse pointer over the approximate time the post was made, the full date/time should then replace the approximate time.

FB Purity v26.1.2 is out now. Lets you view videos in the newsfeed without video ads
Whats new in F.B. Purity Version 26.1.2
- New FBP now automatically adds a “Watch vid (no ads)” link above videos in the Newsfeed that FBP has identified as containing “interstitial” ads. Clicking the red link lets you opens the video in a new tab and plays without any interruptions by interstitial video ads. Below is a screenshot showing an example video with the “Watch vid (no ads)” link inserted.
- Fixed hiding “Sponsored posts” and also fixed hiding “Paid Partnership” ads
- Updated the “Normalize Colored / Big Font Statuses” option
- Added “Posted a Job” newsfeed story type to the “Hide sponsored box/posts” option
- Fixed Made showing the “Set as Background” button (that appears on image pages) optional (under the “Font, Colour & Design” heading) so it can be turned on or off. It is now turned off by default as people were sometimes clicking it by accident when they wanted to click the “Share” button.
- Added “Top Picks in Marketplace” box to the hide “Marketplace” left column link option (located under the “Left Column Links” heading on the FBP options screen.
- New hide left column link option “2018 Election“
- Added hiding old “Friend Requests” and “Friend Suggestions” that started showing in the Newsfeed as newsfeed posts, to the hide “People You May Know” option.
- Fixed hide “Graphical Smileys / Emoticons” option
- Fixed hidden “wrote on wall” triangle when the hide “Graphical Smileys / Emoticons” option was turned on
- New Automatically strips out “?fbclid” tracking parameter that facebook wrong headedly adds to external links
- Fixed FBP filtering on “facebook.com/seen/” page.
- Fixed Profile images on peoples Timelines were displaying circular again despite the “Bring back square profile pics” option being turned on. This should be fixed now.
- New Some people are getting a horrendous emoji/emoticons popup above comment boxes. If you tick the hide “Graphical Smileys / Emoticons” option, as well as hiding all smileys it should also hide that bar. If you dont want to hide all smileys, but just want that bar gone, there is CSS code to hide it on the FBP CSS page
- Renamed “On This Day” hide left column link option to “Memories” as Facebook have renamed it.
Known Issue:
If you have the hide “Stories” right column link option turned on, for some people it is hiding the “Newsfeed” option instead of the “Your Story” option in the Status Update box, that lets you choose either making a post to the Newsfeed or posting as a “Story”. If this is affecting you, turn off the hide “Stories” option (located under the “Hide Right Column Links” heading on the FBP options screen. The reason this issue is occuring is because facebook is displaying the options in reverse order for some people and not others. There is a manual CSS fix for this here.
Important information regarding the “Most Recent” Feed and F.B. Purity
A lot of people have been complaining about Facebook’s Most Recent feed and FBP’s option to keep you on the “Most Recent” feed permanently, saying that the Most Recent feed is not in chronological order. This is because Facebook have attempted to redefine what “Most Recent” actually means, and to Facebook unfortunately it no longer means Chronological order. All that the FBP option “News Sort: Most Recent” does is automatically switch you back to “Most Recent” if it detects Facebook has switched your Newsfeed to “Top Stories”. FBP does have functionality for sorting the feed Chronologically, but it is not automatic, and only runs if you press the “R” key on your keyboard (R for Re-Sort), this function when initiated will sort the currently loaded posts in the Newsfeed into chronological order, if any posts load after the feed has been sorted, for instance if you scroll the page down further, then those new posts will not be in the correct order, and you will need to press the “R” key again. Other possible options for viewing posts chronologically are to try viewing the “Friends Feed”, “Friends List” feeds, and also viewing individual “Timeline” pages, as they should be sorted chronologically.

F.B. Purity v25.0.0 fixes hiding Sponsored Posts in the Newsfeed!
Facebook changed their code to get around FBP’s ad blocking functionality, but I’ve managed to get it working again! :)
Whats new in F.B. Purity Version 25.0.0
- Fixed hiding “Sponsored Posts” (ads) in Newsfeed
- Fixed “Send Message” to Page button if “full screen chat” option is turned on
- Fixed hiding new games crap in the right hand column
- Added numbers to the font selector preview popup text
- Removed the old “Trending” related code
- Added options to hide the “Business Discovery“,”Oculus“,”Creator Studio” and “Trending News” left column links
- Added an option to hide the “Create” button in the top navigation bar (located under the “Top Nav Bar Options” heading on the FBP options screen.
- Fixed “Normalize Status Updates” option

Friend Requests and People You May Know
Facebook has started added a “Friend Requests” box as a post in the Newsfeed, showing your current Friend Requests. You can hide this box from the Newsfeed by putting the text Friend Requests, or if that doesn’t work FriendRequests into FBP’s Text Filter box.
They are also adding a “People You May Know” box to the newsfeed, you can hide this by either ticking the hide “People You May Know” option on the FBP options screen under the “More Options” heading, or else just put the text “People You May Know” into FBP’s Text Filter box.

FB Purity v27.1.2 is out now with lots of fixes! Happy Holidays!
FB Purity lets you clean up and customize Facebook. It hides all Facebook ads and lets you see only the things you want to see.
FB Purity v27.0 Release Notes
Whats changed in this version:
**UPDATE** v27.1.0 is out with extra fixes detailed below
An example of an image in which Facebook’s AIgorithm has decoded the text contained in the image. (FBP has an option to display the info Facebook has decoded from an image, titled “Show Image Classifications on Hover” and it is located under the “Photo Options” heading on the FBP settings screen.
*UPDATE* Fixed in 27.1.1
*UPDATE* Fixed in 27.1.2
Known Issues:
If you have the hide “Stories” right column link option turned on, for some people it is hiding the “Newsfeed” option instead of the “Your Story” option in the Status Update box, that lets you choose either making a post to the Newsfeed or posting as a “Story”. If this is affecting you, turn off the hide “Stories” option (located under the “Hide Right Column Links” heading on the FBP options screen. The reason this issue is occuring is because facebook is displaying the options in reverse order for some people and not others. There is a manual CSS fix for this here.
If you have set a background colour, due to recent code changes at Facebook, the small chat windows will look wrong, this code change in the chat windows, also affects the “Revert Bubble Chat” option, which doesnt work correctly any more. I will be looking to fix these issues in future releases.
The Zap Comments function for hiding comments with just tags has stopped working in the newsfeed, it sill works on Pages and Groups for now.
