Install / Update the latest version of FB Purity by clicking the green “Install FB Purity” button on the FB Purity Install Page

Tip for Google Chrome users who are having problems updating FBP: Tick the “Developer Options” box button on the Extension management page, then click “Update Extensions Now” button. Please note this won’t work if your version of FBP says “Not From Chrome Webstore” next to it, due to a bug in chrome. If it says that, you should export your FBP settings (see the FBP User Guide page for how to do this) then uninstall FBP, then reinstall it via the big green “Install FB Purity” button, then import your FBP settings which you had exported previously. After doing that FBP should be able to auto-update in future and will also be safe from being automatically disabled by Chrome, when it disables extensions that are “Not from Chrome Webstore”.

If you have any problems or questions with/about FBP, please use the available help resources on this website, including the FBP User Guide, and FBP FAQ page which includes a comprehensive Troubleshooting Guide that you should follow if you have any problems.

FB Purity v14.3.1 Fixes Expand News Column, Adds WebFont Preview box plus lots of bugfixes

FB Purity Update: v14.3.1 has been released. It Fixes the Expand News Column option, Adds WebFont Preview box plus lots of bugfixes

Clean up and Customize Facebook with FB Purity

Imagine Facebook without the junk. Get FB Purity, and enjoy a cleaned up Facebook experience: http://fbpurity.com

Changes in this release:

  • New: Added “Preview” (individual web font) link next to the Web Font select box. My WebFont of the Day Tip : “Cherry Swash”.FBP's WebFont Preview Window
  • New:Show Full URLs on shared links” option. (Under the Further Options heading) FBP's Show Full URL on Shared Links option
  • New: Updated “Hide Trending search suggestions” option to remove political debate search suggestions that show up below the search box
  • New: Facebook is now adding prompts beneath your status box asking you to update your status about certain current events (such as Election debates etc) or public holidays or festivals, if you tick the “Hide Nagging Questions” option under “Timeline Options“, FBP should hide these now.
  • Fixed: Fixed “Expand News Column” option. Previously it was set to auto-expand, and would change widths as you scrolled the page down, the width should remain stable now.
  • Fixed: Improved hide “Graphical Smileys / Emoticons” option to show the text behind the graphic in some cases
  • Fixed: Stopped the FBP News notification from showing up on every install, it should now only show up if there is a new story on the FBP fan page.
  • Fixed: Renamed Hide “Wrote on Wall” option to Hide “Wrote on Timeline” to make it clearer to new users what the option does.
  • Fixed: Removed “Freeze top nav bar” option, as it no longer seems necessary and was causing problems for some users (it was cutting off a small section from the top of the page). If you want that functionality back you can put the following Custom CSS into FBP’s CSS box:
    /*Freeze Top Nav Bar*/
    #blueBarDOMInspector>div {position:fixed !important}
  • Fixed: Hide birthday posts in newsfeed if the hide Birthdays option, under the “Hide Right Column Links” heading, is ticked
  • Fixed: Hide “Games + Apps” option on Timeline pages option (under “Timeline Options” heading). This option should now hide games and apps on Timeline pages, (unless the game/app has been whitelisted)

Known Issues

  • If you have the expand news column option turned on and chat/sidebar hidden, then open the chat/sidebar, the chat column will open up slightly overlapping the news column. A page reload will fix this issue.
  • The font preview box sometimes appears in random parts of the screen if the existing font size is too large. I’m looking into fixing this.
  • The WebFonts option works really badly on Firefox, if you set a webfont in Firefox, the screen will flicker a lot. It works fine in Chrome however, in case you want to try it. It also works ok in the developer version of Firefox (FF47) so when the fixes in that version of Firefox trickle down to the stable version of FF, the web fonts option should start working ok, or you could switch to using the Developer Version of FF, though you would currently need to use the Greasemonkey extension with the GM script version of FBP for that.

Please note this won’t work if your version of FBP says “Not From Chrome Webstore” next to it due to a bug in chrome. If it says that, you need to either update it manually via the instructions on the FBP install page, or else export your FBP settings (see user guide on how to do this) then uninstall FBP, then reinstall it via the green “Install FB Purity” button, then import your FBP settings you exported previously. After doing that FBP should be able to auto-update in future.

If you have any problems or questions with/about FBP, please use the available help resources on this website, including the FBP User Guide, and FBP FAQ page which includes a comprehensive Troubleshooting Guide that you should follow if you have any problems.

FB Purity v14.1.0 fixes top nav bar issues & other bugs & adds new functionality

F.B. Purity v14.0.1 has been released. Fixing various issues, and adds some new functionality.

Clean up and Customize Facebook with the safe, free and critically acclaimed FB Purity

“Added FB Purity to my browser, and all the annoying crap on Facebook has gone!”

Summary of Changes in FBP 14.1.0:

Get FB Purity and solve many Facebook annoyances

FB Purity lets you clean up and customize Facebook, making Facebook much less annoying to use.

  • New: Added an option to make “Friends Feed” the default,”News Sort: Friend Feed“. The Friends feed is basically the newsfeed featuring only posts from your friends, none from Pages that you have liked, so it loads much quicker, if you just want to catch up on what your friends are doing.
(Please note: Choose either the “Friends Feed” or “Most Recent” option or neither, if you select both options, it will just default to “Friends Feed” which is naturally sorted by most recent anyway.
  • New: The “Z” keyboard shortcut for the ‘Zap “name tag only” comments’ function, now also zaps comments that feature words/phrases in your Text Filter box.
  • Fixed: Fixed the “Top Nav Bar” colour / image/ logout button options
  • Fixed: The “Sort Feed: Most Recent” option should work again now. Please note that I’ve changed the  name of option to “News Sort: Most Recent”.
  • Fixed: Filtering app/game posts in the news ticker in the right hand column.
  • Fixed: Hide “Liked Page” filter (previously it was also filtering out extra posts that it shouldn’t have)
  • Fixed: The “Show/Hide” toggle functionality on the “Apps/Extras” links at the top of the newsfeed should be working better now
  • Fixed: Hide “Wrote on wall” filter

Install / Update the latest version of FB Purity by clicking the green “Install FB Purity” button on the FB Purity Install Page

N.B If you are using Chrome, you may be able to update by ticking the “Developer Mode” box at the top of the browser’s extensions management page, and then clicking the “Update extensions now” button. If that doesn’t work, you will need to install via the drag and drop method explained on the install page. Or another way to do it would be to export your settings via the FBP options screen, then remove the existing version of FBP via the extensions management page, then goto the install page and install fbp by clicking the green button. Then once its installed, import your settings again.

If you have any problems or questions with/about FBP, please use the available help resources on this website, including the FBP User Guide, and FBP FAQ page which includes a comprehensive Troubleshooting Guide that you should follow if you have any problems.

FB Purity v14.0 is out now, fixing newsfeed filtering for Firefox & the FF add-on also now signed!

The 12 Days of Facebook... Clean up and Customize Facebook with the safe, free and top rated FB Purity browser add-on.

Happy Holidays! I hope you have a great new year too!

Get FB Purity and clean up and customize Facebook just the way you like it

FB Purity lets you clean up and customize Facebook.

Whats fixed in FBP 14.0:

  • Fixed: newsfeed filtering for FF41/42/43+ The FF add-on is now signed too! However, please read all the notes below before installing the fixed version!
  • Fixed: the “Set Background Image” link for photo theatre mode
  • Fixed: the “Hide Send Money Button” option (under the Chat Options heading on the FBP options screen.)
  • Fixed: hiding the “Pages you may like” box that shows up in the newsfeed
  • Fixed: The “Sort Feed : Most Recent” option was no longer working in certain situations. This has been fixed now. If you have FBP v14 installed already, but this option is not working for you, clear your browser cache *then* re-install FBP, as this fix was added a few days after the initial release.

Whats New in FBP 14.0:

  • Added: HideSale Groups” option under the “Hide Links in Left Column” heading on FBP options screen. (N.B this is a late addition, as Facebook added this link right after FBP14 was released, if its not in FBP 14 for you yet, clear your browser’s cache then reinstall FBP)
  • Added: “Remove image from background” option, which shows up under an image in theatre mode after you have set it as your background.
  • Added: “is playing” to the hide “watching / listening to” filter
  • Added: “Hide trending search suggestions” option (under the Top Nav Bar Options heading on the FBP options screen)
  • Added: hiding the seasonal / promotional messages that show up in and under the status update box to the hide “Hide nagging questions” option. (This option is under the “Timeline Options” heading on the FBP options screen)

**IMPORTANT INFO – Firefox Users Please Read!!**

I had to change the internal ID of the FF extension in order to get it signed, which means when you install it, it will appear as a fresh install and will not replace the existing version of FBP. So before installing this new version of the Firefox extension, export your FBP settings from your existing version of FBP via the “Export Settings” link at the bottom of the FBP options screen, then disable the current version of FBP via Firefox’s Add-ons screen. Once that is done, install the new version of FBP, then go to the Options screen and Import the settings you saved previously, via the “Import Settings” link.

If you previously installed FF ESR to get FBP working properly again, you can either stick with that version of Firefox if you prefer it, or you can now update to the latest version of Firefox, by simply Downloading the latest version of Firefox  and installing it directly over the FF ESR installation. This should preserve all your bookmarks, settings, extensions, profiles etc. If you switched to the GM script version of FBP to get FBP working again when FF43 was released, again you can either stick with that, or disable that and go back to the extension version of FBP, its up to you.

Its also worth noting that if you turned off the “xpinstall.signatures.required” setting in Firefox previously, you can turn it back on after installing FBP v14, now that FBP is signed.

One last piece of Firefox related news. Although I can’t support users who use Alpha/Beta/Dev/ versions of browsers, if you do want to get FBP running in the latest Firefox Dev or Nightly versions of FF with Electrolysis turned on, you should know that the current version of the FBP extension does not work under Electrolysis, but it seems the GM script version of FBP does work fine in the latest FF Nightly builds with Electrolysis turned on. It didn’t work too great in the Dev version when i tried it, but I’m sure it will catch up with the Nightly version soon.

Other FBP  Related News

Facebook has been showing a box in the newsfeed recently asking for “Feedback” that looks like this:

We'd like to improve your Facebook experience.

The “We’d like to improve your Facebook experience” box

If you are fed up of clicking the hide this post menu item under the chevron in the top right corner, and seeing it keep re-appearing. Just put the following text (without the quotes) into the “Text Filter” box on the FBP options screen:

We’d like to improve your Facebook experience” (without the quotes)

Then FBP will filter that item out of the newsfeed for you.

Install / Update the latest version of FB Purity by clicking the green “Install FB Purity” button on the FB Purity Install Page

N.B If you are using Chrome, you may be able to update by ticking the “Developer Mode” box at the top of the extensions management page, and then clicking the “Update Extensions Now” button.

If you wish to support FB Purity, please Donate to ensure the continuation of this project. Please also tell all your Facebook friends and family about FBP too! As a special Holiday treat, you could install it for them and show them how it works! :)

Wishing you all a very merry end of year celebration and hoping you have an awesome new year too! Huge thanks to all those people who have supported FB Purity through the years! Without you this wouldn’t be possible. Cheers!

FBP News Roundup : Multiple issues affecting FBP plus solutions

FB Purity News round up **All FBP users, please read this post as it has info relevant to all**

Clean up and Customize Facebook with the safe, free and top rated FB Purity browser add-on

FB Purity, the safe, free and top rated browser add-on lets you hide boring topics or spoilers from your newsfeed, with its keyword filtering technology : http://www.fbpurity.com

Issues affecting Firefox users

Firefox v43 was released on the 15th Dec, and that version of Firefox automatically disables any “un-signed” extensions including FBP.

**UPDATE** FBP v14.0 has now been released, and the Firefox extension has been signed, so please read the release notes for FBP v14 for important information regarding the latest release.

It is possible to enable/re-enable unsigned extensions to be installed in FF43 by changing a Firefox setting: Type about:config into the URL bar in Firefox, then in the Search box type xpinstall.signatures.required then double-click the preference, or right-click and select “Toggle”, to set it to false. This will allow you to install or re-enable any unsigned extensions.

Newsfeed filtering is still broken in Firefox since FF41 was released, so I still recommend installing Firefox ESR (Extended Support Release) via https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/ It is a straightforward, quick and painless procedure, and replaces your existing FF installation, but retains your settings, bookmarks and extensions etc and means FBP’s newsfeed filtering functionality will work properly for you again. FF ESR is a secure and stable version of Firefox that receives regular security updates at the same time as the most recent FF release.

Another option is to switch to using the Greasemonkey version of FBP, which is available on the same  FBP download page as the FF extension. The GM script version of FBP has the exact same functionality as the extension version, but because the Greasemonkey extension itself has been signed, that means you can install any GM scripts you like, including FBP, so no need to alter any settings, or install different versions of Firefox.

Of course another option is to switch to another browser that FBP will run in, such as Chrome, Opera or Maxthon. In my own personal experience FBP functions much better in those browsers anyway.

New Facebook Advert Preferences Interface

Facebook have recently exposed its ad preferences interface which shows how Facebook stores ad topics that it thinks you might be interested in. Of course if you have FBP’s ad hiding function turned on, you won’t see the ads, but you might still be interested to see the list of Ad topics it thinks you are interested in, and may even want to delete them.

You can see the list of ad topics here: https://www.facebook.com/ads/preferences/edit/ You will be pleased to know that FBP now has functionality for cleaning out the list of ad topics from that page, as Facebook only allows you to delete them one at a time. FBP adds a button to that page, titled “Clear Ad Prefs with FBP” and clicking it will remove all the topics from the page. I recently fixed a bug with this, so you may need to reinstall FBP to get the button working properly so it clears all the preferences out without leaving any behind, in a single sweep.

Trending Topics appearing in Search box popup

“Trending Topics” have now started appearing as search suggestions in the Search popup box. FBP has an option under the “Top Nav Bar Options” heading to completely hide the “search box popup”, but I have now figured out some CSS code that just hides the Trending/Popular/Recent Searches from showing in the popup. To add the code, click the CSS tab link on the FBP options screen, then copy and paste the following code into the box, then click the “Save & Close” button.

/* hide search suggestions */
#facebar_typeahead_view_list._21c._2yob, #blueBarNAXAnchor div.injectedSearchSuggestion {display:none}

For more CSS customisation options, check out the FBP CSS Page

Bug in Hide “Liked Page” Filter

Another thing worth mentioning is the Hide “Liked Page” filter, under the “Link / Page Stories” heading on the FBP options screen. This filter has a bug which causes extra posts to be hidden than should be (they will have text filter match “like page” written under them). So if you are suffering from that problem, turn that option off, until i can figure out a fix for it.

Bug in Hide “Auto Tag Suggestions” option

This option is not working properly any more, since an FB code change, and its very hard to fix, so may not be back for a while, as I have lots of other more pressing issues to deal with right now.

The Hide “Your Memories” filter

Some people are noticing that some memories are getting past this filter. There is a solution: Go to the On This Day page, click the Preferences button, then click the “Edit” link in the people section and add your own name to the list of people whose posts will be filtered out.

New Facebook Popup Notifications in the Bottom Right Corner

One last thing, I keep getting people saying FBP’s Hide “Popup Notifications” option is no longer blocking facebook’s popup notifications, in fact fbp is still blocking the popup notifications that appear at the bottom left side of facebook pages, but it cannot block the facebook notifications that appear at the bottom right, and show up whether or not you actually have Facebook open at the time. These are a different type of notification and you can actually stop them in either Facebook’s own notification settings and / or the browser’s settings. The  image below explains how to block the right hand side popups from showing up in Google Chrome browser:

How to block Facebook's new browser popup notifications that appear at the bottom right of your browser window.

Click the padlock in the URL bar, then click the Notifications menu, and tick the “Always block on this site” option.

And the image below, shows you how to turn them off on Facebook’s own Notification Settings page:

Turn off Facebook's

How to turn off Facebook’s “Push” notifications, that pop up at the bottom right of your browser, whether or not you have Facebook open.

Hopefully this news is helpful to some of you,

Best regards,

Steve

More on the Firefox 41/42+ newsfeed filtering issue: I’ve not yet got this fixed completely, though i have managed to get the ad filtering working in the newsfeed again. I’ve also re-instated the FF extension download, as previously it was not available on the download page, due to a misunderstanding on my part. I thought FF42 was blocking the installation of the extension, but I realise now its not yet blocking it, since Mozilla pushed back their blocking of unsigned extensions to FF43. If you want FBP’s newsfeed filtering to work correctly in Firefox, you need to read the previous post that explains how to get working again.

Install / Update the latest version of FB Purity by clicking the green “Install FB Purity” button on the FB Purity Install Page

If you wish to support FB Purity, please Donate to ensure the continuation of this project. Please also tell all your Facebook friends about FBP too,

How to fix the broken newsfeed filtering in Firefox 41 (and above)

FB Purity issues on Future versions of Firefox

FB Purity FBP newsfeed filtering is broken in Firefox 41 – How to fix it

Something has changed in Firefox 41+’s Javascript implementation that stops FB Purity’s newsfeed filtering functionality from working correctly in that browser. All other FBP functionality should still work OK in FF41 (and above). If you want to get FBP’s newsfeed filtering working properly again, there are a few different solutions available:

  1. Install the ESR (Extended Support Release) version of Firefox over the top of your current Firefox installation (during installation, if asked select the “Replace” option which replaces the current Firefox installation). This reverts Firefox to a slightly earlier stable version of Firefox (v38), that still receives all the latest Firefox security updates. FBP will work fine in this version of Firefox. Please note the installation process for Firefox ESR is quick and painless.
  2. Switch to using a different browser that FBP will run on, e.g Google Chrome (or chrome clone), Opera or Maxthon.
  3. *Update* I’ve managed to get the functionality that filters out the Ads (suggested/sponsored posts) from the newsfeed working again in FF41/FF42/FF43. Clear your browser cache then re-install the FF extension via FBPURUITY .COM for the fixed ad filtering, though all other newsfeed filtering functionality is still currently broken.

When I figure out a solution to the newsfeed filtering issue in FF41/FF42 itself, I will post a news update about it, so please be patient until then, if you are not prepared to follow my recommendations on fixing the issue yourself.

If you have any other problems with FB Purity please follow all the steps in the Troubleshooting Guide on the FBP FAQ page

Thanks,

Steve

Important news for users of the Safari version of the FB Purity browser add-on

FB Purity lets you clean up and customize Facebook making using FB a much pleasanter experience.

Safari FB Purity lets you clean up and customize Facebook. Get rid of the junk features of Facebook that you don’t want to see:
Get FBP today

Important news for people using the Safari extension version of FB Purity.

Apple a company with a net worth of over 733 billion dollars has decided that developers of Safari browser extensions must pay them $99 per year, for the privilege of toiling long hours developing free browser extensions. This is quite frankly obscene, and not fair in the slightest. None of the other browsers charge developers to develop free extensions.

The other issue of course is that the latest versions of Safari are only available on the Mac platform, and I am a PC developer, so that is the other roadblock.

This means I can no longer develop FB Purity for Safari. The currently available version of the FBP Safari extension, still seems to be working, but I will no longer be able to provide updates for it, and I do not know how much longer it will remain working.

The options available for you in future will be to switch to using FBP on one of the other supported browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Opera or Maxthon.

I think Apple have shot themselves in the foot here, watch Safari’s (already small) share of the browser market plummet, as the extensions that Safari users love using cease being developed.

If anyone wants to leave feedback for Apple on this policy, you can do so via the following form:  https://www.apple.com/feedback/safari.html Though I think its unlikely to have any effect.

Best Regards,

Steve

Important News for Firefox users of FB Purity

FB Purity issues on Future versions of Firefox

FB Purity FB Purity issues on future versions of Firefox

Important information for Firefox users of FB Purity.

The developers of the Firefox browser are imposing new limitations on browser extensions, they are getting extension developers to jump through hoops to get their extension’s signed aka verified. If they do not jump through all the required hoops, they will not approve the extension. Future versions of Firefox will not allow extensions that have not gone through their bureaucratic hoop jumping process to be installed.

Firefox v40 (the latest stable release of Firefox) is not yet affected by this. FF40 is just displaying a warning on extensions that have not gone through this process, and is saying they are un-verified. When FF41 is released, any unverified extensions that are already installed will be disabled, and unverified extensions will not be allowed to be installed. You will be able to alter a setting in the browser to turn this restriction off. For the instructions for this, see further down. When FF42 is released they will remove the ability to change that setting, meaning no unverified extensions will be allowed to be installed. BTW just because an extension is unverified, does not automatically mean it is malware, it just means it hasn’t been re-written to comply with all Mozilla’s bureaucratic policies.

Getting FBP verified will mean I will have to re-write an awful lot of FBP’s code, which already works fine, just to comply with their bureaucratic standards. Its quite a pain, and pretty pointless to be honest. And work that I shouldn’t have to do, considering its already too much work just keeping up with Facebooks code changes, and supporting the extension etc. On top of having to rewrite the extension to enable it to be verified, starting with FF42, the browser’s architecture is changing radically to a multi-process tab system, which will also mean re-writing even more of FBP’s code.

FF41 and FF42 are already available now to beta testers, which is why I am getting lots of support queries about it, and hence making this post now. I cannot support people using Beta version browsers, as its just too much work already supporting the existing stable release browsers that FBP works on.

FF41 (Stable) official release date is scheduled for 22nd Sep and FF42 (Stable) official release date is 3rd Nov. So that gives me some time to try and get the extension signed, and also get the newsfeed filtering working on FF42.

If you must use Beta/Dev versions of Firefox, you are on your own with regards to FBP support, but you can turn off the requirement that only verified extensions can be installed by following the instructions below via Ghacks:

To fix the issue, do the following (please note once again that this will work in all versions of Firefox until Firefox 42(stable) is released. When that release hits, only “Dev” and “Nightly” versions will support the switch. Please note altering your Firefox settings in this way may render your browser un-usable if you make any mistakes, so only do this if you know what you are doing. Don’t blame me if it goes wrong.

  • Load about:config in Firefox’s address bar and hit enter.
  • Confirm you will be careful if a warning message is displayed.
  • Search for xpinstall.signatures.required
  • Double-click on the preference name so that its value is set to false.
  • You may install unsigned extensions again in Firefox once you have set the preference to false, a restart of the browser is not necessary. Any extensions that were already installed will need to be re-enabled.

Another option for FF41 and FF42 users is to install the Greasemonkey extension, and use the GM script version of FBP, which is available on the Firefox FBP install page, as GM scripts do not need to be signed. Yet another option is when FF42 (Stable) is released, Mozilla will also be releasing an unbranded version of Firefox, that will allow unsigned extensions to be installed. Or finally of course you can always switch to one of the other supported browsers (Chrome, Opera, Safari or Maxthon)

As far as I am aware FBP is currently working ok in FF41 but in FF42 most options are working apart from the Newsfeed filtering options. Again please don’t expect any support, if you intend using these browsers.

There is a hell of a lot of work involved in keeping FBP running and theres even more to do to get FBP working properly on FF42. Donations are always welcome to support the work on this.

If you are using a supported browser, (the latest stable firefox, chrome, safari, opera and maxthon) and are having other difficulties or problems with FB Purity, you need to follow the steps in the FB Purity Troubleshooting Guide.

If you have any questions about FB Purity, please read the FBP FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions), thanks.

I Hope that helps those seeking answers,

Best Regards,

Steve

PS Palemoon users who were using the extension version of FB Purity, need to switch to the Greasemonkey script version of FBP, as the extension version is no longer compatible with Palemoon. Palemoon is not an officially supported browser, so I can’t offer help with that.

PPS I’m also getting lots of queries about support for Microsoft’s latest browser, “Edge”, that comes with Windows 10. Edge does not currently support extensions. When Microsoft adds extension support to Edge, I will be in a better position to let you know if FBP will be able to support it or not. Microsoft have said that it should be easy to convert Firefox and Chrome extensions to work with Edge. If that is indeed true, then an Edge version of FBP is a definite possibility.
**UPDATE** FB Purity is now available for Microsoft Edge (you need to have the latest Windows 10 Update (Anniversary update released 2nd Aug 2016). Get the FB Purity browser extension for Microsoft Edge here
