FB Purity v13.4.1 has been released!

Added FB Purity to my browser and all the annoying crap on Facebook is gone!

Changes in this version:

  • Fixed: “Changed location” newsfeed filter, this filter wasn’t working very well previously. Now it should hide all Check-in type newsfeed posts that feature a map.
  • Fixed: Selecting the “Top Stories” menu item when you had the “Sort feed: Most Recent” option turned on, was not working correctly. This is fixed now.
  • Fixed: With the “Sort Feed: Most Recent” option switched on, sometimes when attempting to go to a notification, it would instead take you back to the newsfeed after showing the “Switching Sort Order to Most Recent” message.
  • Fixed: Filtering on list pages (Friend lists and Interest lists) wasn’t working for the first few posts on the page
  • New: “Hide Group Conversations” in Chat (Sidebar) option. Previously the hide offline friends option would also hide the group chats, this is now fixed, and theres now a separate option to show/hide group chats. This option is located under the “Chat Options” heading.
  • New: Hide Send Money Button (in Chat) option. This option is located under the “Chat Options” heading. (I think only people in the USA are seeing the send money button at present)
  • New: Friends Feed and Photos Feed newsfeed menu options (under the Newsfeed dropdown menu at the top left of the newsfeed page). The friends feed is basically just stories from your friends, (no fan page stories and it doesn’t seem to have the issue of showing posts out of order, like the “Most Recent” feed does), the photos feed, is just photo stories from your friends. N.B if your net connection is quite slow, these menu options won’t show up due to a currently unresolved timing issue.
  • New: Hide “Edit Profile” link option (under left column link options)

Install / Update the latest version of FB Purity by clicking the green “Install FB Purity” button on the FB Purity Install Page

  • Fixed: FB Puritys newsfeed filters had stopped working correctly, allowing stories that you wanted filtered out through, this is now sorted.

  • Removed: Removed the “E” keyboard shortcut for toggling the “Expand newsfeed” option, as it was causing problems for people who were triggering it accidentally. You can however still use the  Clickable “⇔” button at the end of the FBP info bar (where it says how many stories were hidden) to toggle that option, or set it via the FBP options screen itself.

FBP v13.2.1 fixes “Hide offline friends” & “Sort: Most Recent” bugs

Changes in this release:

  • Fixed: The “Hide Offline Friends” in chat option was broken for some people, it was hiding all friends in chat instead of just the offline ones.
  • Fixed: the “Sort: Most Recent” option. Due to a facebook code change it was no longer automatically switching to Most Recent.
  • Fixed: the hide left column link options.
  • New: Hide “New Stories” Popup Button option.

  • Changed: Replaced “Unread stories” feed option with “Friends feed” option because facebook removed the unread stories functionality. (This option does not show up all the time, due to a bug. If its not showing up for you, refresh the page, then click the “Newsfeed” drop down menu in the top left hand corner of the newsfeed page. The “Friends Feed” is basically your newsfeed minus posts from “Fan Pages” etc.

How to get the old Facebook Chat Back With FB Purity

Facebook are rolling out a change to the Chat Sidebar that shrinks it down to a narrow strip of your friends profile picture icons. The sidebar expands to also show their names if you move your mouse over the sidebar.

A major problem with this, is you will not likely know all the current profile pics of your friends by sight, and not all your friends have a picture of their own face as their profile pic. so it means extra fiddling about to see who is online, whereas before you could easily see at a glance. Another problem is that FB Purity’s Chat specific functions don’t work with the narrow Chat Sidebar version.

They only show this narrow strip if the browser is not wide enough, but luckily there is a simple solution to get the old fully expanded chatbar, with your friends names visible, back, and that work wtih FBP’s chat customization options.

Methods for getting the Old Style Facebook Chat Sidebar Back

Method 1 – Expand Your Browser’s Width

1) If you don’t have your browser full screen already, expand your browser’s width until the old style chat bar returns.

If the first method doesnt work or is not applicable, the second method should work for you.

Method 2 – Adjust Your Browser’s Zoom Level

1) Decrease your browser’s zoom level. To do this press the “Ctrl” and “–” keys until the chat sidebar returns. ( If you use a Mac, use the CMD key instead of the CTRL key )

Please Note if you wish to restore your browser’s zoom level to normal you can do so by pressing “Ctrl” and “0” (zero), or alternatively you can increase the zoom level by pressing “Ctrl” and “+”
2) Obviously with the browser zoomed out, the text is going to be harder to read, but you can fix this with the safe, free and top rated FB Purity browser extension’s “Font Size” option, that lets you increase the font size. The font size option is under the “Font, Colours and Design” heading on the FBP options screen, which you can access by clicking the “FBP” link in the top nav bar. Once you have selected the font size you want, tick the “Set” checkbox, and then click the “Save & Close” button.

  • Fixed: “Sort: Most Recent” option for new search (FBP was erroneously triggering the Sort Most Recent function when a search was done)
  • Fixed: “Set as Background Image” link that shows beneath Facebook photos

Hooray! Facebook have re-enabled the FB Purity Fan Page

Hooray! Facebook have now re-enabled the FB Purity Fan Page. Thanks very much for all your support, and thanks also to those who have donated! Its very much appreciated! :D

Now that the fan page is back I can get on with improving FB Purity, also the FBP website is long overdue for a re-design. I have started work on the the FAQ page first. See the new FAQ page taking shape.

Are Facebook really making the world more open and connected by shutting down free software initiatives that attempt to make the Facebook user experience more pleasant and less annyoing?

On 2nd Nov 2014 Facebook disabled the Fluff Busting (FB) Purity fan page, and as per the last 2 times they did it, they gave no warning, notification or explanation.

Do Facebook really hate their users so much, that they would do this? At the time they disabled it the page had over 178,561 fans, the add-on receives consistently high reviews on the official browser add-on sites, and has even been reviewed and recommended in The Washington Post and CNET amongst other places. Many FBP users say they only continue using the Facebook site because of FB Purity. By disabling the FBP fan page they have attempted to cut off communication with the fans of FBP. I have emailed Facebook asking them to re-enable the page and give an explanation as to why they have taken it down.

I have created a new temporary FB Purity Fan Page to for letting the FBP users know the FBP news and to get feedback from the fans while I work to to get Facebook to restore the old page.

Please “Like” the new page and post your support for getting the old page back. Also if you know anyone that works at Facebook, ask them to try and find out what has happened to the FBP Fan Page. If you have a blog or are active on any forums, or work for any news sites or can submit the story to any news sites, please do, the more people that know about this the better. Facebook should not be allowed to get away with this Social Media atrocity.

Is Facebook really making the world more “Open and Connected”? Their fascistic policies of shutting down Fan Pages it doesn’t like, such as the FB Purity Page, with no notification, warning, or explanation seems to suggest otherwise.

As well as the new Fan Page (which could possibly be deleted at any time, as per Facebook’s usual fascistic tactics) you can also stay up to date with FB Purity News Sources that they can’t interfere with, such as:

FB Purity adds new Newsfeed Options:

FB Purity adds new Newsfeed Options: “Unread Stories” & “Photo Stories”

  • New: “Unread Stories” link. If you click the “Newsfeed” selector in the top left hand corner, FB Purity  adds a link to Facebook’s new “Missed Stories” feed, which is titled “Unread Stories” – “Posts you might like but haven’t seen yet.”
  • New: “Photo Stories” link. If you click the “Newsfeed” selector in the top left hand corner, FBP adds a link to Facebook’s old “Photos” feed”
  • New: I added a warning if a game or app requests your email address, also made the Block App button more prominent on game intro pages, and fixed the block app link on actual game pages
FB Purity improves your security and privacy on Facebook

FB Purity inreases your security and privacy on Facebook. In this example FBP checks if games / apps are trying to get your email address, and warns you about it. It also lets you know if the app wants the ability to post to your Timeline.

  • Fixed: If you have the “Sort: Most Recent” option turned on, previously you couldn’t select to view “Top Stories” as FBP would change you back to the “Most recent” feed again. This is fixed, now if you select “Top Stories” via the toggle at the top of the left hand column of the newsfeed, FBP will temporarily allow you to view the Top Stories, but clicking the “Home” link or FBP logo will change you back to “Most Recent” again.
  • Fixed: Some people were getting redirected to the “Find Friends” page. This would occur if there were no posts at all in the newsfeed, and FBP would try and auto click the “More stories” button, but in this case it was actually a “Find Friends” button. Also fixed redirects on “Pages Feed” and “Friends/Interest list” pages, and also fixed the redirect that sometimes occured when trying to watch a video, where it would redirect you back to the newsfeed after a couple of seconds.

FB Purity cleans the Junk Off Facebook

  • Fixed: The hide “Graphical Smileys / Emoticons” option as well as hiding emoticons now also hides Facebook’s new stickers in comments functionality
  • Fixed: Previously when you opened the FBP options screen it would scroll you to the top of whichever page you were viewing, I fixed it so now, when you close the FBP options screen, it returns you to your previous position on the page
  • Fixed: Web Font selection bug, it would sometimes show the wrong selected font, if the one you had selected had a similar name to the one you actually selected
  • Fixed: If the “Disable Autoplay” option was turned on, clicking facebook videos in the newsfeed would only work on the second click of the play button. I’ve now removed FBP’s “Disable Autoplay” videos option, and have replaced it with a link to Facebook’s own Video Settings page, when FBP opens the settings page via that link, it automatically turns off autoplay for you.
